Laguna de Torrevieja is striking, but it is a protected natural area rather than a normal swimming lake. A good visit starts with the right expectations.
Why is it pink?
Official tourism information links the characteristic colour to the very high salinity and microorganisms in the water. The colour can look stronger or weaker depending on light, season and conditions, so a neon-pink view is never guaranteed.
How can you visit?
The lagoon is part of the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park. Official visitor access to the pink lagoon is organised through the saltworks tourism visit. Around Laguna de La Mata there are marked paths, viewpoints and guided eco-routes.
What is worth doing in the park?
Laguna de La Mata is the easier area for walking and birdwatching. Official eco-routes cover nature, birdlife, salt history and the area's distinctive agriculture.
A note on photos
